KPPPM: A World of Color in 50 Grams

December 10, 2013

How do we describe KPPPM?

Koigu Painter’s Palette Premium Merino is the yarn equivalent of:
- Disney’s World of Color Spectacular (without the high-powered water fountains)
- Bertie Bott’s Every Flavoured Beans (they have EVERY color imaginable)
- Rorschach Tests (“what does this color remind you of?”)

KPPPM’s colorways have no names.  Instead, they have numerical codes, like P513-383 or P624-242.  You won’t know what it looks like until you see it for yourself.  The color is completely open to your interpretation.  Maybe one color might remind you of your favorite aunt’s sofa, while another makes you think of visiting a farmer’s market in July.  Someone else might be reminded of something completely different!  When you think of it, a numbered colorway is a sensible way of naming these yarns — it’s hard to fit Salmon-Pink-With-Flecks-of-Orange-and-Purple on a tiny tag.

Koigu KPPPM

This is a light 100% Merino Wool yarn that will tempt any knitter into the world of fingering-weight yarn.  Its 175 yards per skein knits up 28 stitches over 4″ using a size US 3 needle.  Each dyelot is 20-22 skeins each, so if you find a color you like, snap it up before someone else gets it!

Patterns

Now that you are drooling over this beautiful yarn, what will you make with it?

Knits from a Painter’s Palette by Maie Landra is a wonderful book that uses mitered squares/domino knitting to really showcase the many beautiful colors within a skein of yarn.  The patterns range from simple scarfs to fantastic pants.  In addition, they explain how they come up with their various colorways and decide which shapes suit each kind of yarn.

Churchmouse Designs also have beautiful patterns using KPPPM.  The Linen Stitch Scarf is an elegant way of combining a couple different colorways into a harmonious design.  And Turkish Bed Socks are a great one-skein project!

Another popular design is Stephanie Dosen’s Beekeeper’s Quilt, in which you can make up to 12 hexipuffs with one 50g skein!

Other favorites are: Shoalwater Shawl by Fiber Trends, String Theory Scarf from Spindleshanks, and Joelle Hoverson’s Chevron Scarf.
