Measuring a Swatch:
Measure the stitches with a ruler or other straight edge or a gauge check, not a flexible tape measure, in a few places to get an average. Sometimes, if your tense and stressed the gauge is tighter. Conversely, if you're more relaxed and at ease, the gauge is looser, so taking a measurement over a few places and averaging it is best. If your swatch has more than just a small difference from one spot to the next, it will be safer to knit it again.
